My seven year old son and I read this book in print about a year ago. This time, we downloaded the audio version from the library. We thoroughly enjoy Hiaasen's young adult books. The narrator for the audiobook does a nice job putting the right amount of sarcasm into some of the dialogue and this story was quite accessible to my son. He loved hearing about the tiny owls and it's nice to read about a kid standing up to bullies in a productive way. Definitely recommended reading for those that can

Hiaasen's first novel for young adults has the same kind of environmental message as his novels for adults. While offering much to think about, Hiaasen is also hilarious and extremely entertaining.
Roy Eberhardt is the new kid at Trace Middle School in Coconut Grove, Florida. Through a series of unfortunate events, he discovers the burrowing owls living in a vacant lot that is soon to be home to a brand new Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House. At the expense of the owls, of course.

Full of Hiassen's trademarks -- humor and love for the ecology of Florida -- Hoot richly deserved its honor. I had seen and enjoyed the movie made from it a few years ago, so I knew the basic plot, but the book was even better. The story of three middle-schoolers (well, one doesn't actually go to school) fighting to save the habitat of rare burrowing owls also touches on issues of parenting and bullying, but never gets dreary or preachy.
