A short novel told from Mary's point of view as she nears the end of her life in Ephesus. She feels as if she is being hounded by her caretakers (Jesus disciples?) to tell her story in a way that fits their own narrative. She, a somewhat cantankerous old woman and an independent thinker, refuses to satisfy their demands and instead, she shares with the reader her memories and regrets, which don't quite match with the traditional stories of her life. A powerful read for Lent
Listened to audio done by Meryl Streep. She is amazing. This is an interesting novella with Mary narrating about her life in her old age.
I would never have read this had it not been for a book club and it was definitely interesting, well-written, and original (also depressing). Easy to read in a day. It might be more fulfilling for someone with better knowledge of the Bible.
Audiobook, unabridged, is read by Meryl Streep.
