Beautifully translated from Korean, Yeong-hye’s story is told in three linked novellas, from three different perspectives. Though she is the center of the narrative, her voice is only heard in the dream sequences.
After a disturbingly violent dream, Yeong-hye decides to stop eating meat. As everyone around her loses their minds in response to her personal choices, she gradually descends into madness.
If you’re up for a dark tale of violence, sexual obsession, and mental illness, this is for you. ...more

Such a strange and disturbing book. The writing was unlike anything I've ever read. It felt like all my frames of reference and sanity were slowly and precisely undone. Almost as though, origami figures were being precisely and ceremonially unfolded. There are wildly violent and sexual moments in the book, so that may be the wrong image, but the quiet, beautiful sentences set a frame for the wildness.

A unique story about how one woman’s madness affects those around her. It gets quite grim by the last third of the book, so watch out. It affected my enjoyment quite a lot, but it’s well written and is very layered.

Thriller focusing on the mental breakdown of a young woman (Yeong-hye). After a dream, she decides she will no longer eat meat. Told in three parts we see her perspective, her husbands, her brother in-laws, and her sister. It starts out seemingly harmless. She decides to not eat meat. However, this does not sit well with her husband and family. One could speculate it is an outcropping of her controlling husband and domineering father. Things quickly spiral out of control.

Very well written, easy read. I wish I had just read it quickly and not been reading other things, as this book has so much in it and to move away from it takes you away.
Written from 3 different perspectives about the main character who decides not to eat meat anymore because of a dream she had. Each perspective is selfish and not really about the main character-- but about how her decisions have effected them. None try to understand her slow decline into her mind.

First read: I really did not understand part 3. I think I need a reader's guide or something to help me comprehend the meaning of this dark novel.

Very, very strange. Mental illness, dreams, people's response to veganism, cultural norms. Read for Week 43. A book with a chilling atmosphere (scary, unsettling, cold). It was definitely unsettling.
