I don't think I'd be overstating to say that I loved this book. There's a blurb from Time on the back cover that compared this story to "Jane Austen playing Dungeons and Dragons with Eragon's Christopher Paolini", and I don't think it's that far off. I love reading books set in the Regency and Napoleonic war eras. I love dragons and historical fantasy. I don't know what I expected when I picked this up, but it certainly wasn't what I got! I was unsure when I started because the writing is very formal (like Laurence himself), but by the time the dragon hatched and started talking, I was in!

To say that Laurence is a reluctant dragon aviator is a huge understatement. He had his life all mapped out -- a long solid career in the Navy, captaining his own ship. Maybe a perfectly pleasant and acceptable marriage to a young lady from home. Becoming bon ...more

It feels like peak nerd to be reading a book about the Napoleonic wars BUT WITH DRAGONS. A feel-good regency fantasy (alternate history?) with uptight naval captains, independent women, feisty intelligent dragons... And Napoleon.
