This book was really cute! Steampunkish urban fantasy/paranormal humor with a little romance thrown in. I absolutely love Alexia Tarabotti and wish I could sit down to a lovely English tea with her and chat for hours. Alexia is soulless- kind of the antithesis of the overly-souled Vampires and Werewolves (only individuals with "too much" soul can survive the metamorphasis) - Alexia and others like her cause the paranormal folks to resort to their human forms with just a touch. If you take it for what it is -- a witty "steam punk" take on a victorian romance, this light hearted romp of a novel is a fun read. Lots of sex, great clothes, a couple of interesting characters -- it's not Terry Pratchett brilliant by a long shot, but approaches a female version of the Eddie Drood series. I can gobble those up like candy, and will no doubt gobble these as well. I do wish the weaponry was better... Maybe she'll introduce an armorer in the next book! ...more

I had this book on my to-read shelf for years and once I finally got around to picking it up, I was excited to read it after the author bio on the back had me cracking up. But while I'm all for the strong, quirky heroine, this one took me a while to get into.

I love books like this written with a sense of humor. Too many authors take themselves, and their characters, too seriously. Alexia is a strong, independent, intelligent woman and she doesn't let anything get in her way. ...more
