I have wanted to read something by Jhumpa Lahiri for a long time, and I suppose my expectations were sky high, which left me a little disappointed. Overall this is a beautifully written book exploring how one tragedy affects a handful of lives profoundly. It is very character driven, and while they were compelling, the characters lack arcs. I learned about Indian politics and history--I did not know about the Bengali uprising--and did grow attached to the characters. And yet something was still

A slow start, but after the first 1/4 of the book or so, I got into it a bit more. A very beautifully written story.
