Just, no. Don't bother. I'm kind of embarrassed I read it, to be honest. Fortunately it was only a waste of 64 tiny pages worth of road trip time. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because the creepy factor in the middle of the book was high and I enjoyed the suspense and mystery (for those whopping 20 or so pages) - the book was touted as an homage to the classic ghost story and if the middle section had been worked more thoroughly and expanded, it would have been a pretty great read. What happens when an author known to play with your mind in her novels gets asked to tell a story by George R.R Martin? This... And it's as mind twisting as you might expect.
As usual Gillian Flynn writes characters who grab you from page one. You may not like them, they are usually troubled people, but you find yourself turning the page. When a wealthy client shares concerns about her creepy stepson and a house that is possibly haunted by a malevolent spirit, the narrator sees a lucrative opportunity. She offers to cleanse the house, even though she doesn’t actually believe in spirits at all.

You know a book is going to be interesting when the opening lines are "I didn't stop giving hand jobs because I wasn't good at it. I stopped giving hand jobs because I was the best at it"

This novella/story is short but not sweet. A fantastically disturbing little ghost story.

The ending of this one left my head spinning and pushed this into 5-star territory for me. I could not stop thinking about the ending for days after I finished it. So. Darn. GOOD!
