First of all, aesthetically this book gets 5 solid stars. I loved the cover art and illustrations throughout the book which were simply lovely, and the feel of the pages, with their rough uneven edges and texture were wonderful for a bibliophile to get her hands on. It was a chunky book and it felt good in my hands. I enjoyed the story which was a fun mixture of fantasy and reality, magic and action. I thought there were some really interesting characters and some great interactions. But I also

I am glad this book stood on it's own, since I didn't realize until after I started it, that it is part of a trilogy. Good characters, fun language, good storyline....love the art, which really enhances the tone of the story. I would give book 2 a look based on this one :)

I tried to read this book, but I just could not get into it. It had an engaging first ten pages or so - reminded me a bit of Graveyard Book, but then it seemed like way too much set up for too little pay off. After 25%, according to my Kindle, I didn't care about the political struggle over Wildwood, the recovery of the toddler, or the survival of the other human characters.
Life's too short, but I certainly gave it a serious try. ...more
