I was surprised at how into this book I was. My mom first tried to get me to read it about two years ago and that was an immediate turnoff, as I generally think what my mom reads is not what I want to read. The book is also about WWII and the Holocaust, and having grown up in the US, I've read so, so many WWII and Holocaust books that for a long time in my adult life, I've been almost boycotting them. There are so many other things to read about that I don't know anything about. But this book tu

I have been wanting to read this book for so long, and am so glad I did. Although narrated by Death and set in one of the most unfortunate times in recent human history it is such a pleasure to read. Perfect reading - you're invited into a story and you digest the words as they come, deliciously.

I really enjoyed this quirky historical novel set in WW2 Germany. Zusak does a superb job of letting the reader know what it might have been like to be an ordinary German citizen living in a close-knit neighborhood during the War. Some of his characters are patriotic Nazis, others are more politically lukewarm, and still others are persecuted by Hitler's soldiers who carry out his policies.
The narrative is Death. I was prepared to dislike him, but actually felt sympathetic for him at times. I lo ...more

I will admit that I was not initially sold on the book. I read the first little bit and found the soul reaper/death a bit gimmicky as the narrator. This is why I always keep reading. This book was wonderful. It was such a beautifully told story and the ending was so hauntingly sad (and not a spoiler as the narrator alludes to the ending all the way through the book and also, it's a book about Nazi Germany - it's not going to have a happy freaking ending).
Definitely a recommended read. ...more

Great book.......AMAZING ending. I don't know why, but although I enjoyed the entire story, only the last 40 pages or so really spoke to me and moved me. Throughout the rest of the book you are teased with a snippet of the future, then thrown back into the past to hear how that future comes about, and for some reason this back and forth and tease annoyed me.

My only complaint about the Kindle version of this book is the inability to make the illustrations from Max's sketchbook larger. I would have liked to see those in better detail/resolution. Overall, this book tells a beautiful and heartbreaking story (which is funny since the narrator is Death), and has many wonderful characters.
