Of the ten books I have read so far this year, this one is in the top 2. I really liked the way the characters (even Death) were fleshed out. Having met survivors and read their books, this touched me. It was a different perspective that I am used to getting and although the subject matter is hard it was easy to read, I was riveted. Very good read! Perfect for a toasty-warm winter's night inside. :) I couldn't put this book down - this haunting tale will stay with you after you've set it down. I could see everything clearly in my mind's eye - little Liesel and her craving for books and the written word; her best friend Rudy who she would go and steal food with; the effects of the war raging on around them and affecting them and their families and neighbors. I suspect this is the kind of book that people either love or hate, and not much in between. Death tells the story of a girl who steals books in Nazi Germany. Death tells it rather slowly and with so much metaphorical language that it's really irritating and extremely dull. An example: "Trust me, though, the words were on their way, and when they arrived, Leisel would hold them in her hands like the clouds, and she would wring them out like the rain."
