The Book Thief by Markus Zusak provides readers the other side of death and heartache. Walking with death, you examine the life of Liesel Meminger and unlock a chapter of her life. Nicknamed the Book Thief, she steals words and then shares them with loved ones during difficult times. Growing up as a German during WW2 her adopted family braves hiding a Jew risking the consequences. At first sight, her family life is chaotic but underneath that gruff exterior and pretense of anger is a loving coup

This is another book read because it was on a summer reading list for one of my kiddos - and not a book on it is especially light or uplifting, all serious stuff about the worst of humanity. This book is no exception dealing with the life of a young girl in Nazi Germany, a girl whose brother dies in the first few pages, whose parents are both gone, whose foster parents are a little rough around the edges and on and on, the characters in this book are all more complicated and often damaged in som

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the unique perspective that having death as the narrator created. While the story, which takes place in Germany during the height of the Nazi regime, had many sad parts there were parts that held joy and even hope. Not an easy read (the book IS narrated by Death, so you know it's not going to be a laugh riot), it was still a book I could not put down. I really didn't know what to expect and was not looking forward to reading a 550+ page book after having read two long books back-to-back...I was pleasantly surpri

This book took a bit to get into at first (it is narrated by "Death" - no surprise since that is how it starts - so a bit weird). But the story is tragically beautiful and creatively done about a German gilr in the midst of WWII. I would recommend it to anyone!
