Beautiful, poetic writing. Jesmyn Ward is a native of Mississippi, so she writes the rural deep South perfectly. Her metaphors never stray, and you can feel the sticky hot sun, and smell the woods and the rain. The characters are a loving family trying to survive as Hurricane Katrina is building in the Gulf. My only hesitation at recommending this book is that part of the plot involves dog fighting, in graphic detail. I had to skim some of it, to be honest. Recommend with reservations.
