This first novel by Chabon shows his promise as a writer. He manages to write characters that are compelling even when he isn't sure what he wants to say about them. This is a coming of age story, with the honesty, confusion, sexual experimentation, and fantasy of so many young men. The only Chabon I haven't read; somehow in my 2002 Chabon-reading binged I missed this one.
I don't think I'll ever find a Chabon that I love as much as I love Wonder Boys; there's just something about that novel that hits every single one of my buttons. That said, this was enjoyable but strange. Clearly a first novel, and clearly Chabon gets better, but I found the ending strange and a little upsetting, and not even upsetting in a good way. I love Michael Chabon, but haven't read much of his early stuff. Pre-Pulitzer, he is much lighter and accessible. This is about a recent college grad discovering himself, and making bad decisions. I loved it.
