I'm so enjoying each installment of this series. In this particular novel, I was more intrigued by the subplot about Gamache than the actual mystery, but both were compelling. As always, the residents of Three Pines and Gamache's team are a joy to visit with.
Definitely read these books in order. The ongoing plot with Gamache is central to the series, and reading it out of order would be confusing. ...more

Ridiculously good. But don't start reading the Inspector Gamache novels with this one! Start at the first book, Still Life. There are threads in the first three novels that for the most part get tied up in this, the third one. The final 20 or so pages of The Cruelest Month are among the most nail-biting and heartbreaking I have ever read. Penny is a master, and for my money the current Queen of the genre.

More of a 3.5 star-er...the crime on this one was strange but the audio is so brilliant.
