What Members Thought

This book is just what I expected it to be--hard boiled detective novel; slightly shady P.I., femme fatale, all of it. It's so much the model for these things that it almost felt cliche, then I would remember that in fact it's the model. I loved reading this and Sam Spade is just a fabulous character. I'm surprised he didn't become the lead in a series of stories.

This book was interesting because of the story line and the audio reader did a great job. The characters weren't likable and I didn't ever feel like I could trust the main character. It's just a weird book and the characters felt choppy-not my favorite. (Read Harder Challenge-read a book published between 1900 and 1950)

There is a lot going on in this little detective novel, and I think that it will benefit from a reread. The slang, casual biases, and multiple subplots and misdirections distracted me out of my normally focused reading head-space: WTF is a green hemorrhage anyway, Effie? I particularly enjoyed the very stylized dialogue where nothing of consequence actually gets communicated, and the morally ambiguous protagonists, and the non-ending was equally annoying and apropos.
