I recall reading the excerpt in the New York Times when this book was first published. I as blown away. And then I read the entire book. It is a strange book, an almost clinical look at the death of a beloved spouse. And yet emotion kept leaking through the stark sentences. For me, that made the book even more emotional. A writer trying to look objectively at a subject which can't help but be personal. I thought it was extraordinary.

At times this book was a bit difficult to read because of the heavy subject matter. However, as a lover of all things deep, emotional and heartfelt - I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Joan Didion is a captivating writer and has become one of my favorite authors, whom I truly admire; especially after I read Play It As It Lays, and even more so now after finishing this memoir. This will be a book I'm sure I will revisit again in the future.

Well written with complete honesty. The author describes the year following her husband's death. She does a thorough job researching grief and thinking her way through it. Thought provoking.
