I was only one-third done with this book when I attended the book club I read it for. At that point I was slightly intrigued by the story, but found the characters totally unsympathetic. My book club had a lively discussion and seemed to like it, so I forged on. I wish I hadn't--and I rarely abandon books. I kinda, sorta hated this book...relatively predictable twists, annoying characters, and for me, practically unreadable writing. The plot was interesting enough for me to skim my way to the end, but I really didn't enjoy it.

This book was good, but very depressing! I felt so bad for Catherine, although I can't really say I liked her or any of the other characters in the book. They all lead such tragic lives, it was just very sad. At least there was some small glimmer of hope at the end, if you want to call it that.
