Oh, this was so painfully realistic. The in-betweenness of the age of Rose and Windy, wanting boobs, almost studying the "townies" of their beach getaway town Awago, like trying to peer behind the curtain of grown-upness. They watch horror movies to prove something - to themselves? To the "Dud" at the check out counter at the corner store. I love that Windy is more true to her self - she is afraid of the movies and says so, she stands up to Rose when she starts name-calling all the girls in the ...more

This graphic novel won't change your world, and it might not even be the best graphic novel you read all year (unless you only read this and like the graphic novelization of Twilight), but it is worth it for decent bildungsroman with a female main character. A coming of age story with the best artwork of any of the graphic novels I have read so far.
It is the story of two girls who meet up every summer in a place called Awago beach. Rose and Windy spend the summer watching horror movies, swimming in the lake, and becoming obsessed with the lives of the older teenagers that live in Awago while dealing with the drama of their own lives.

I expected a traditional story line, with tension and buildup and a big climax. I guess there was a big climax that resolved some things, but I felt like the scenes before and after that were more vignette than story, more poetic and brief without really doing anything. I suspect this had something to do with the way I read graphic novels and not a reflecti ...more

There is one whole star there for the illustrations because they were stunning. The rest of it? Meh.

Great character development, setting, atmosphere. Sad and real and just right.
