I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, but as it went on, I felt it didn’t live up to its potential. The protagonist, June Elbus (what a terrible name!), was engaging and articulate, albeit a misfit who only felt understood by one person, her dying uncle, Finn. After her uncle dies (of AIDS), June slowly begins to learn more about Finn and some of the secrets he kept from her. (view spoiler)

I really liked the relationships between characters in this novel. They were complicated by more than events that occur in the novel. I connected with parts of multiple characters and with the time period. June Elbus is coming of age during the 80’s which was my own teen years even though the AIDS epidemic never touched my life I remember the fears.
