I've had my eye on this book for a while, and was thrilled when my book club decided to read it for our next meeting. Based on the synopsis, I had a feeling about some of what would happen, but there were also a lot of surprises. I loved reading about June's relationship with her sister, Greta. It was full of conflict and strife, but also very loving. I also enjoyed the parts that involved June's adventures with her uncle's "special friend."

So many of my reviews lately begin with characters and this one is no different. June's voice hooked me from the beginning. June is weird and out of place and imaginative. She is a thoughtful, interesting girl and as she learns the secrets of her family and the world, I grieve with her for all she doesn't understand. And yet, she is so incredibly insightful. Reminiscent but not derivative of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird.

This book was a reminder of my childhood. It reminded me of how AIDS rocked the world and people were so ignorant about it. It reminded me of old songs and tv shows. And it reminded me of the joy of youth. Very touching story....I'm glad I read it!!

This was a beautifully written book about love and loss, unlikely friendship, all the different ways we tend to hurt the people we love the most (both intentionally and unintentionally).
