What Members Thought

A bloodbath is predicted for September in San Francisco and although the adults doubt there is any connection between several ritualistic murders that follow, Amanda and her fellow group of intrepid teens online, known as Ripper, believe otherwise. Quirky characters, a love triangle and a couple of former Seal Team Six members populate this page-turner, which could very easily be for young adults--older teens, anyway would enjoy this one---because it's the teens who quickly come together to figu

Let me start this review by saying that when I went to add Ripper to my Goodreads "currently reading" list, I was dismayed to see the plethora of low star ratings. I couldn't understand it - surely it was a bunch of people who didn't know what they were talking about. You see, this is not my first Allende book and I was confident that I knew her style, I knew what she was capable of and there was just no way that she could put out anything that would merit less than four stars from me.

Not what I expect from Allende, but it did keep me turning pages.
A group of teenagers, led by Amanda Jackson, belong to an online murder club where they investigate crimes and try to solve them before the police do. A series of disturbing murders hits too close to home for Amanda and the group scrambles to identify the killer before it’s too late.
The ending is where the book fell apart for me, as the killer’s identity should have been super obvious to Indiana, the super-intuitive healer who sp ...more

I was disappointed in this book. I've been a long time fan of Isabel Allende's work so I had high expectations. The characters did not have much depth and the story meanders. I was interested enough to finish but had to convince myself to keep reading.

I was given an advanced copy of this book by Elle Magazine and I struggled with this one. The idea is a grisly, but interesting one, but I just couldn’t get into the rhythm of this book. At first I wondered if something had been lost in the translation, as the language is very stark and quite a departure from the magical realism Allende is known for. Yet as a trudged forward in the book I couldn’t blame the translation for the composition of the book and the rough transitions between each sectio

A hundred pages in and this trite, boring "mystery" was headed nowhere, so I gave up on it. I couldn't stand most of the characters and the plot was virtually nonexistent. Very disappointing genre effort from Isabel Allende.

So great to read a book that's well written and has a good story. Some of the techniques that make Allende such a giant in the world of magic realism translate a little strangely to this genre, but overall I loved it.
