What Members Thought

I was deeply disappointed by this book.
I thought Dave Eggers was the darling of the literary world (he's been nominated for both the Pulitzer and the National Booker award, after all), so I expected The Circle to be a well-written but dull story of how a universally-adopted modern convenience is actually evil. (Soylent Green, anyone?) Instead, what I found was a poorly written and dull story of how a universally-adopted modern convenience is actually evil. I am so confused. I'm almost as confuse ...more

Deeply creepy, the Circle is one of those books that is just a little too close for comfort. If you've worked in Silicon Valley, or in tech, or at start ups, you've been to the Circle's campus. You've been to the parties, you've talked about transparency and collaboration, you've gone to bed with sake (or bourbon) to slow your whirling over-engaged brain. You've even rolled your eyes at the paranoia of others, who do not see the beautiful simplicity of this new world that we are creating.

That was fairly disturbing! I kept saying to myself, "what kind of person/society would allow that sort of privacy invasion to happen?" And then I would realize I was already taking part in something similar (like Facebook tagging, carrying an iphone with GPS, or wearing a fitness bracelet). Dave Eggers just takes it all to the next level, and makes you think about what we're giving up when we are so cavalier with our privacy. Quick and interesting read.
