Even though The Kite Runner didn’t entirely meet my expectations I decided to read A Thousand Splendid Suns as well. Again, like in The Kite Runner I found the storyline slightly predicable with some things being just a bit too convenient and well-timed to make it truly believable for me.

As good as The Kite Runner was, this was even better. I’m not sure the book description really serves it justice, because I almost didn’t listen to it. I’m really glad I did. Not only does Hosseini give the reader a wonderful story about the lives of two women who should be worlds apart, but he gives you a portrait of life for a woman in Afghanistan in recent history. Hosseini is an amazing story teller. Like Kite Runner, this tale is set in Afghanistan and spans the time period from the 1970's until the present. This is the story of two women, Laila & Mariam, & their struggles to survive and endure. It gave a real sense of the drastic changes that took place over the course of the Taliban's rule there. A very quick read and very moving.

Loved listening to this story. I had just saw the movie "The Kite Runner" but I think I liked this a little better because the main characters were female. I totally understand why so many readers love his books.
