I gave this 4 stars, but if I could give it 3 1/2, I would have instead. A pretty good young adult fantasy. Fairly original. Quickly-paced. Characterization not necessarily strong. Lina's grandmother dies, and hardly a tear is shed - where do they bury people in Ember? There's not really any fire in the joint, so they aren't cremating folks...do they just throw them out into the darkness? There are only 3 books in Ember that are taught in school, numbers/letters/city of Ember...well, I'd kind of ...more

Read this one on a friend's suggestion and really enjoyed it! I'm not much of a sci fi girl, but this was pretty low-key. I thought the author did an amazing job of conveying the intensity of the darkness. I watched the movie after reading the book and as I suspected there was just no way they could ever convey how oppressive the darkness was. It was written so well that I got panicky a few times when they experience blackouts and such. Anyway, great read. I'm anxious to start the next book in t ...more

A self supporting, totally enclosed city where there isn’t any crime and everyone gets along sounds like it might be an easy life.

In addition to this injustice, they realize that the city’s generator is closer to total and complete failure than the city authorities make it out to be.
Lina discovers a note that a

I read this with my 5th graders - a really interesting story that takes place in the city of Ember - which is underground and starting to fall apart. Is there more to this world, is there a way out? A fun read with a great cliff hanger ending.

dystopian story before dystopian became popular...for a juvenile audience as opposed to a teen audience as is the trend right now...the big question now - where is my copy of book 2

Book one in the Ember series.

Set in the perhaps not-so-distant future, the first book in the series tells of Ember, a city where it is always night, but where there are no lights in the night sky. Created by the legendary Builders, Ember's inhabitants have enjoyed peace and prosperity for hundreds of years.

Now, however, things are looking grim. The storerooms are getting empty and the lights fail with ever-increasing regularity. Two enterprising young adults, Lina and Doon, race to solve the my
