A Darker Shade of Magic, book one.
In Schwab’s incredibly inventive fantasy world, Kell is one of the two remaining Antari, magicians who can open doors between the four parallel Londons—Red London (Kell’s home), White London (ruled by sadistic twins), Grey London (the ordinary world that has no magic), and Black London (destroyed by rampant magic and closed off forever). A very exciting read full of magic and adventure. I can't wait to read the next book!

So I wasn't a big fan of Vicious (looking back I'm surprised I gave it 3 stars, I assumed I'd given it 2) mainly due to the lame motivations of the villain, but was willing to give Schwab another go because there were things about it that I'd enjoyed. This book started out relatively stronger, but never really won me over.
I liked the magic system and the parallel worlds/Londons, but I just didn't really care about the characters all that much. Lila was impossibly strong, sassy and clever for me. ...more

The writing isn't the most complex or overly descriptive but the story is interesting enough to get you through. I would recommend this for middle school to early high school. Not overly complex and the ending comes so quick that you barely know what happened.

My goodness, V.E. Does not disappoint. I love the magic and the world building and a set of appalling and fascinating villains.
Kell and Lila are spectacular in their chemistry which is fun and full of banter but not too over the top that ids annoying. (And who wouldn’t love Kell? He’s charming and adorable!)
I can’t wait for more and am glad I finally got around to making time for this trilogy.
