Delightful. Prunella is just so exasperatingly awesome, and staid Zacharias her perfect foil. The somewhat archaic language (or least time-period specific) fit so well, even if I did have to employ my reader's dictionary quite a bit (I enjoyed learning some new words). Great pacing, fantastic secondary characters (Damerell forever!), and a well-drawn world of magic and extremely believable (bureacracy and) politics.

Interesting premise, but the writing is a little rough. So many big words; it felt like the author must rely heavily on a thesaurus. I did appreciate that the main characters in a fantasy novel were not the typical white wizards, but the emphasis on their color was a little overdone. I don't know, I'm white, so maybe people of color really are that hyperaware of their skin tone?
