It's generally the books I don't really like that result in the longest reviews. When I really love a book, I'm too busy READING to think about how to review it!! Basically: if you think this might appeal to you, read it. READ IT!!!!!

Delightful. Prunella is just so exasperatingly awesome, and staid Zacharias her perfect foil. The somewhat archaic language (or least time-period specific) fit so well, even if I did have to employ my reader's dictionary quite a bit (I enjoyed learning some new words). Great pacing, fantastic secondary characters (Damerell forever!), and a well-drawn world of magic and extremely believable (bureacracy and) politics.

One of the nice things about not doing a reading challenge this year is that I can put a book down when it isn't grabbing me. I gave this one ten pages, but the writing was too stilted. A regency fantasy shouldn't be a slog, and this was going to be one. ...more

this book is charming as FUCK and really, I can only be furious with myself for not reading it sooner. Prunella!!!!! ZACHARIAS!!!! good lord, these magical children.
