Definitely somewhere between odd and interesting. It's definitely the harsher side of the world and fairy tales. I did find myself attached to all three of the mains character, but I felt like the plotline was a little more simplistic (as compared to like Mortal Instruments or Ice & Fire, which were read so recently). I very much did like the ending though and I will read her next one in this series as well.

Hmmm. I liked this book, probably 3.5 stars worth. The writing reminded me a little of Francesca Lia Block, who I really like.
Kaye is 16 years old and different from her peers in a way she can't pin down - her head's in the clouds, her daydreams sometimes come to life - and she used to communicate with faeries when she was little. Now she's returned to her childhood home and stumbles back upon that world she thought she had lost access to. When she finds out she is a changling and her faerie fr ...more

For the record, I enjoy Holly Black, and I love fairy tales. And I like DARK fairy tales, which this is. But this fell just a little short for me, the characters had such potential but felt like thin shadows of those found in Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series. I still liked it, and it's better than much that is out there. But it could have been really really good. I'm disappointed that it missed its potential, because it could have been (should have been) special.

I've seen this book on a lot of "If you liked Twilight, try..." lists. I was skeptical: how can a vampire book be like a fairy book? However, I get it now. The sexual tension between Kaye and her beau (no spoiler) is very similar to tension between Bella and Edward.
That being said, I liked this book well enough. I especially liked it for my high school students. It has romance, adventure, mystery and intrigue, blood and gore... I know exactly which student's desk this book will show up on, once ...more

An interesting book, but rather chaotic, which may be what the author had in mind. Sometimes I had no clue what was going on, and that wasn't helped by some boring and/or confusing explanations. I'll probably pick up the next book that I see features new main characters. That might help my enjoyment of the story, as Kaye was touch and go for me. Overall, a bit flawed, but generally entertaining.

POPSUGAR Reading Challenge 2019: A book inspired by mythology, legend, or folklore
I liked the mixture of faerie and contemporary setting in this book, it was believably constructed. Unfortunately something about the tone of the book was a little off, the way Kaye and Roiben reacted or spoke jarred me sometimes.
A fun little diversion, but it didn't blow me away. ...more
