The Book of Unknown Americans was a very good book that I wish I would have read rather than listened to. Multiple narrators, some better than others and it all felt too acted out. A timely book to read - people come to this country not to ruin anyone’s lives, but to get better work/healthcare/safety/education. Minor and major characters here from different countries who all end up in Delaware. The sweet and sad love story of Mayor (from Panama) and Mirabel (from Mexico) is the heart of the book ...more

After she suffers a serious brain trauma, Mirabel’s parents leave their life in Mexico behind so that Mirabel can attend a school in the United States where she will receive special education services. Once in the US, her family encounters serious challenges, and grapple with the knowledge that their best efforts might never be enough to give their daughter the life they wish for her.

Lovely and sad.

A pretty good book, the story revolves around Maribel, a teenager who suffered an accident resulting in TBI. Her parents bring her from Mexico to the US, in hopes that enrolling her in a good school will help heal her brain. They move into a run down apartment complex, filled with lots of kind, interesting neighbors hailing from all parts of Latin America.
