I tried to read this book ten years ago and couldn't get through the first 15 pages. Recently I've had numerous people in my life tell me that that book has been an important part of their reading history...and that if I just get past that first chunk (which only lasts like 30 pages) then I would love it. And they were right. What a great novel with such heart behind it. I would recommend this to anyone. ...more

I think that what really makes this book work is the way it is written. You witness this story through the viewpoint of each of the daughters — even little Ruth May. It’s a very compelling read, and I heartily recommend it.
