Beautiful book about human life and all life, how all creatures’ paths are intertwined with each other’s. Told through 3 main, connected protagonists, the stories are funny, sad and human. Kingsolver narrates the audiobook version and her performance is excellent. She fully inhabits her characters with tone, accent and meaning. If you enjoy good writing mixed with charm and a touch of sweetness, you’ll enjoy Prodigal Summer.
Hmmm, I love Kingvolver but this one just seemed too contrived. She was trying too hard to write about the beauty of nature and how it effects our lives that it became almost silly to me. I still read it, still enjoyed the characters but I never became very committed to the book.
I’ve discovered fairly recently that I love science and nature writing, especially when it’s written with gorgeous prose. There are three main stories that intertwine, but my favorite character was Deanna Wolfe, a biologist living alone in a protected forest. Her job is to observe the local wildlife and protect it from poachers. There’s also Lusa, who comes to Appalachia to live on her husband’s farm, only to discover that she is an unwelcome stranger. This was first time reading Kingsolver. Her writing is magical. Rarely am I able to feel and learn so much while reading a novel. I will definitely be picking up her other works.
