I was so excited to see Chris Bohjalian's newest book up for review. Why? Because Bohjalian's writing always gives me something to walk away with: a new perspective. The Light in the Ruins lived up to the promise of Bohjalian's other works and has left me feeling pensive and thoughtful for most of the day.

A complex mystery set in World War II Italy and the decade afterward. I enjoyed the wartime setting and all the intrigue between German, Italian and partisan soldiers. Truly, war often brings out the best and worst in people.
Ultimately, however, I was disappointed by the ending. Felt a little duped.

This was a suspenseful and compelling historical mystery set in my favorite place in the world, Italy, so this book had a lot going for it. But someone has to tell my beloved Chris Bohjalian to tone down the violence a bit. A lot, actually. His book about the plane crash gave me nightmares. The one about Armenia was so horrifying, I couldn't finish it. And this one was nearly as bad.
