"The small boys came early to the hanging." When I read that sentence twice, the entire book came together. This was such a long, intense book but recommended (Noor), so I had to read it. I loved it. I thought I hated historical fiction, but this book was set in the 1100s and it was wonderful. I learned what my last name meant: Wright is an occupational surname meaning "craftsman, builder," from the Old English wryhta meaning "worker."

I liked this book, but wasn't blown away. Frankly, it gets a bit trashy and can see why it has been adopted so easily into a mini-series.

I put off reading this book for months because I didn't really read the description. Once I did, I was intrigued. It's a LONG book, so it took me a while to finish it, but I really enjoyed it. Compelling and well written, it's got a great mix of emotional drama, historical fiction, and architectural detail. My only complaint is that the sequel doesn't pick up where this one left off, so there's a gap in the story. Still, I'll likely be picking up the sequel soon.

This is a fantastic book that drew me in from the start and held my interest until the last page. It is not a book that I would have chosen on my own, but read for my book club and I am glad I didn't pass it by simply because of size. I found the characters well defined and the story intriguing.
