Only the first part of this book, published separately as The Sword in the Stone, is included in the Guardian's 1000 Novels... list. However, I feel the entire book is well worth reading. In the first part, which is suitable for older children, White takes the Matter of Britain and expands upon Arthur's childhood , imagining how the boy known as Wart is prepared for kingship without realizing it.
