It is definitely an epic story. Portions are a slog and Tolstoy often does a bit more narrative story telling as opposed to story showing. Or, frustratingly, characters will act and then rather than allowing the reader to interpret the actions for themselves, will tell the reader what to think of those actions or dialogue. I often found myself disagreeing with the interpretation, or alternatively, wondering what the result might have been without Tolstoy interpreting action or dialogue for me.
