Probably 4.5 stars. Less powerful than the first book in the trilogy, but those are my personal feelings and others may think this book had more oomph than the first, who knows. I found it hard to keep up with who was who, since now there are...four generations...I think...? to keep track of. I mean the first generation is dying off, for sure, but is still mentioned, and the fourth generation is just now being born, but wow, that's a lot of names to keep straight.

It took a very long time for me to get into this book. My husband was reading it, so that spurred me on some. He didn't like it at first either. "Like reading twenty five Christmas letters." I can’t get enough of this trilogy by Jane Smiley. It’s such an interesting premise - to follow an Iowa farming family through the generations, beginning in the 1920’s and ending up in the present day. The books are dense and detail-oriented, and I love that. It’s not as though huge eventful things happen to every member (and by this second book which begins in the 1950’s, there are dozens, so it’s a little tricky keeping them all straight), but there are ups and downs similar to what every fami
