The last Jane Smiley book I read was Moo, and I barely remember it, other than I didn't like it that much. Then along comes Some Luck, and here I don't want to get off the L because I'm reading it, I stay up half the night last night to finish it, then I start in on the next one in the trilogy because it's just that good, and you guys. YOU GUYS.

I've seen quite a few bad reviews, many complaining that "nothing happens" or the book is "boring, like watching paint dry", etc. I can understand that some readers don't appreciate this type of novel. There is really no plot, and instead we have a collection of moments from an entire year...little snippets of the Langdon family's day-to-day life. I'm glad I had to read this for a book discussion, because if I hadn't, I would have given up after the first chapter (narrated by a baby - !!??) and I would have missed out on incredible story. Can't wait for parts 2 and 3! ...more

This is a slice of life vs. a plot-driven novel, but I enjoyed it immensely. It is a bit like reviewing aspects of U.S. history through the lens of a single family's experiences. ...more
