This is so excellent. First, if you're like me, and you respect the existence of comics and graphic novels but don't know the first thing about them, neither on the level of reading for entertainment nor on the level of literary criticism and aesthetic theory, it's fibbity fab. Also, McCloud really knows his shit, from art history to the literary canon to fanboy trivia. This is a great book for librarians, English teachers, art teachers, and students of literature. This isn't what I expected. I thought this would teach me something, something about the history of comics or what goes into creating comics, but ... nah. This is more like "argumentative fuel for when someone tries to diminish you for your love of comics." Herewith we have nine chapters of McCloud’s ideas and opinions, all presented as well-researched fact, all in an effort to prove that comics really are a higher art form. These pages practically drip with defensiveness.

An enjoyable read that really makes you think about how graphic novels are constructed. Having finished reading it I am tempted to go back over my graphic novels and re-rate them based on what I've now learned from this book!
