I don't even know where to start with this book. It's been riffed as a contemporary classic, and in deciding to head into it, I checked the star grades friends on Goodreads had given it. While I had a few friends in the 1 or 5 stars area, the vast array was 2-3's, so I checked in with a friend on her opinion, too, since we match on about 75-80%

I'm surprised myself by adoring this book. While I'm not much a gamer, I loved this romp through 80s nostalgia.
Will Wheaton does the audio version and actually made me care about video game high scores. Really run.

I would love to rate this more a 3 3/4 stars than a full 4. Great story, but some literary tropes and a few too perfect parts took away from the story as a whole. I listened to the audio and wasn't overly impressed with the narration. ...more

Audible -- Will Wheaton (enough said)
I absolutely fell in love with this book and I didn't want it to end. Maybe it was because it reminded me of my childhood in the 80s, or Stand by Me listening to Will Wheaton all day, but I was so engaged in this book.... and I discovered you can speed up the reading on Audible. A win-win.

Went to see the movie a few days after I finished and was so thoroughly disappointed that the film is nothing like the book.

Wow. I now know why they are making a movie from this book. Wow. I give it a 2 thumbs up and a PG13 rating. Someone told me it was like Harry Potter. No, no it is not. A bit more mature than Potter and more 80s references than the average teen ager can recognize. It was written for adults. It will delight the geek in every adult who grew up in the eighties and played video games.
