I love these books, I have read all of the Mitford novels... some more than once! Visiting and spending time in Mitford, North Carolina, is like a breath of fresh air. The characters come alive on the page, so real I can see them in my mind's eye, my own version of them, and I wish I could have some of them sweep me up into a hug, cook something for me, or just share a conversation with me. They're that real to me, and I know their storylines by heart!

This was recommended in a post on "The Great American Read" on Facebook. I had heard of the series, and I was curious. It reminds me of Lake Woebegon, but with a religious bent - cutesy and folksy (apologies to LW fans). (I later realized that I was unconsciously associating this series with Jessica Mitford et al. - was I misguided!) I can understand why people like this series and find it relaxing - but it's definitely not to my taste.

Mitford may be too unbelievable, the characters all just a little too goody goody, the plot too simple. Sometimes however it is nice just to relax and let the characters work their way into your life much like real people might. I bought this book for my mother, but read and fell for the simple way of life, the characters that I could almost hear as their voices spoke to me.
