Ugh, this was terrible! I was so excited about it, because I loved Lauren Beukes's last book The Shining Girls, so that makes it even more disappointing. I am mad that I wasted a week of my life reading this book. It made no sense and had all kinds of idiotic side plots that went nowhere and had nothing to do with the rest of the book. Maybe it's me and I just didn't get it...

Not as brilliant as Shining Girls, but Broken Monsters is still an engaging read. I love how Lauren Beukes always tried to blend many genres into her books. The mystery here is not that compelling, but I like the main characters enough (especially mother-daughter Gabi and Layla) to enjoy the book decently. The ending left you with questions - I'm ok with it though. Only in some parts there are holes here and there, but the pace is still fast for a mystery/thriller/crime book.

This book is brutal and intense. Brutally intense. Intensely brutal. This is so fucked up. This is also a mind-blowing work of art.
