In this very difficult year (2020) I've been reading gentler books than I normally do, and while this has never been my favorite Alcott (that would be Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom) I'm startled by how much I am disliking it. It just seems so sappy, even Amy - the undeniably selfish and flawed youngest just gave up her chance for new colored pencils to buy her mother a large bottle of cologne for Christmas. I haven't read this since I was a kid, when I loved it and read all of LMA's books. I was put off, at first, by the flowery language and the moralizing. Once I got used to the style, I began to appreciate it as an adult - the story of a family of girls trying to live in a way that reflects their values, even when those values don't always fit with the rest of society's. While their father is away fighting in the Civil War, the March sisters (beautiful, girly-girl Meg, outspoken Jo, shy Beth, and spoiled Amy) live in a poor but loving home with their saintly mother. Laurie, the poor little rich boy who lives next door becomes like a brother to the girls. Lively and realistic, the characters are never too perfect; they each have their flaws and we love them all the more for it.

I changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars because I love this book more and more each time I read it. Apparently the author actually wanted women to have more rights, and this story is about making the best of things in a repressive society. (I read that in an intro.)
