In this very difficult year (2020) I've been reading gentler books than I normally do, and while this has never been my favorite Alcott (that would be Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom) I'm startled by how much I am disliking it. It just seems so sappy, even Amy - the undeniably selfish and flawed youngest just gave up her chance for new colored pencils to buy her mother a large bottle of cologne for Christmas. I haven't read this since I was a kid, when I loved it and read all of LMA's books. I was put off, at first, by the flowery language and the moralizing. While their father is away fighting in the Civil War, the March sisters (beautiful, girly-girl Meg, outspoken Jo, shy Beth, and spoiled Amy) live in a poor but loving home with their saintly mother. Lively and realistic, the characters are never too perfect; they each have their flaws and we love them all the more for it.

Don't let the length scare you away. This one is an enduring classic for a reason. HIG

I changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars because I love this book more and more each time I read it. Apparently the author actually wanted women to have more rights, and this story is about making the best of things in a repressive society. (I read that in an intro.)
