In this very difficult year (2020) I've been reading gentler books than I normally do, and while this has never been my favorite Alcott (that would be Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom) I'm startled by how much I am disliking it. It just seems so sappy, even Amy - the undeniably selfish and flawed youngest just gave up her chance for new colored pencils to buy her mother a large bottle of cologne for Christmas. I haven't read this since I was a kid, when I loved it and read all of LMA's books. I was put off, at first, by the flowery language and the moralizing. Once I got used to the style, I began to appreciate it as an adult - the story of a family of girls trying to live in a way that reflects their values, even when those values don't always fit with the rest of society's.
