I tried really hard with this one - I finally gave up after about 120 pages. I was excited to read this - it takes place in San Francisco - one of my favorite cities. It is also about the Japanese internment during WWII - another topic that fascinates me. Unfortunately, i thought the novel was quite slow and didn't seem to be going anywhere. After 100 pages I expect the story to to be underway.

At the heart of this is a love story. It has all the elements of a well wrought romance, but when the emotional punch is pulled, it felt like a little too late. I think that part of my problem is I never got a hold of any of the characters.
Alma as the main character, is described as unconventional, bold and bright. But when it comes down to her reacting to HUGE life and world events, I didn't get any sense of the impact on her personally. How does she cope in the long run as a Holocaust orphan? ...more

A good story but I think Allende tried to include too many issues in here -- Japanese internment, the Holocaust, sex trafficking, and AIDS/ attitudes toward the LGBT community. All of these are very important issues to explore, it just seemed like too much for one book. Still a very good read though and there aren't many novels about Japanese internment out there.

I always love Isabel Allende. This multi-layered story wove together quite a few historical ideas (the Holocaust, the Japanese internment camps, the 1980's AIDS epidemic) to good effect. I liked the main characters Alma and Irina, although I was disappointed with them as well. I think that was what Allende intended -- no one is perfect here, but everyone is interesting and human.

A dreamy surreal book about love. The narrative is third person and while technically it would probably be considered omniscient since it switches between the characters, it actually feels limited due to the style feeling so distant. It was like reading a love story through a filmy filter.

We often cannot imagine ourselves growing old. In our mind, we are still young and virile. Effortlessly leaping through life, until the day we realize we cannot. Time ages us traps us in the norms of the day. Love, however, is timeless. In Isabel Allende's new book, she takes us on a journey through time and shows us that love is immortal.

I wasn't nearly as fond of this book as I was of Allende's earlier work, but talking about it helped. I thought that the characters often seemed stereotyped. I'd like them, and then have to wade through developments that felt inauthentic, contrived. I loved the gardener. And I wanted the main character to connect with him. Her inability to live a life of "poverty" felt contrived. I really didn't buy that. But I also was interested in how Allende was going to unfold the narrative. So, in spite of

I love Isabel Allende's writing. So beautiful. A book about friendship, love, and aging.
