I thought I knew Lafayette but I was terribly wrong. This book essentially covers Lafayette's life through his involvement in the Revolutionary War. It briefly touches on his life after he leaves the US. I love Sarah Vowell's ability to insert appropriate contemporary references into history, specifically connecting the recent government shutdown with the difficulties of the Continental Congress. Another thoroughly enjoyable, educational, and enlightening, not to mention funny, book from Sarah Vowell. Once again, I listened to it on audio, and her trademark snark translates well into her own dry delivery. The subject matter seemed scattered sometimes, but either myself or the material gained focus as the book went on (and I was able to listen without as many interruptions--also surely a factor). I have been wanting to read Sarah Vowell for at least twenty years and finally got around to it. I picked this one in response to a reading challenge item on "a book about your country's independence," and because it reminded me of Daveed Diggs. Vowell's writing is sardonic, and so, so funny. Every sentence has a punch line, and though some readers apparently tire of this and wish she interspersed the jokes with some serious history, I do not.
