This was a remarkably good read. I was very saddened to think of the conditions this child grew up in.
Although certainly a well written book, it is one that seems to suffer for the same reasons. Although I'm not opposed and do enjoy those events that happen being written with the grace and structure of fiction, this one seems to over-sentimentalize and exaggerate. He seems to have convinced himself that everything in his life had some grand over-arching theme/purpose which would lead quite cohesively to the next point. I struggled to get through this one FOR YEARS. Maybe it was because it was all misery and no hope, maybe it was because McCourt seemed indifferent to it all, but there was something about it that this memoir that made it a challenge for me to get through.
I listened to this on tape (back when I had a tape player in my car!!!) and it was fabulous. His voice!!!! LOVED IT!!!
