The amazing thing about this book is how vividly Mr. McCourt recalls his childhood in Ireland. He writes from the perspective of his adolescent self, so you really feel first-hand the hunger, the desperation, and the guilt of an impoverished Irish Catholic childhood. The writing is lovely, the poverty is almost unimaginable, and it's a wonder he ever made it into adulthood. One of the themes throughout is the power of education and the written word. This book is one that everytime I see or hear about it, a rush of feelings run through me. I think that everyone should read this book.
