I was positively surprised. I didn't expect anything of this.

Wavering between three and four stars here. I found the ideas behind the book sort of cool: the necromancer who controls the dead with various bells, the idea of magic performed with charter marks vs. free magic, the Old Kingdom and the new. Yet, the story didn't really grab me despite it's cool ideas and solidly good writing. The plot was repetitive--Sabriel defeats bad guy, then moves on, then does it again.

This was a re-read for a book challenge. Really exciting fantasy about necromancers and a quest, with a great female protagonist.
Another Saratoga Reads nominee, this is an epic fantasy adventure with an unusually human heroine; darkly atmospheric, good fighting sequences, and interesting side characters. All in all worth reading, though I feel in retrospect that I should have enjoyed the tale more than I did.
