The Leftovers takes a look at those left behind after the sudden disappearance of a large percentage of the world’s population. Was it The Rapture or some other unexplained phenomenon?
Whatever the cause, Perrotta spends no time trying to explain the how or the why of the extraordinary event that takes place, but instead spends his time delving into the lives of regular people living in a very normal, small town in America. Review of the audio version by Nerfreader.
The Leftovers is human drama with a sci fi set-up, and its strength is its characters. They are immensely believable, each with their quirks and coping strategies. The point-of-view changes from character to character, and this change in perspective makes up for a lack of action. For a book about grief and coping, it's pretty funny. I especially liked the cults that sprang up after the Disappearance, how each is distinct yet credible.

I loved the creepy yet compelling premise that some kind of "Rapture" had occurred and millions of people all over the world (including JLo!) just disappear one day. People handle this in a variety of ways, and I really can't blame any of them, even the really crazy ones, because god knows how I'd react if something like that really happened. However I would add that I liked this more at the beginning than at the end. I guess I was hoping for something "more", some greater resolution.
