**2015 Reading Challenge W/Josh: #5 A Book With A Number In The Title**

This book was waaayyy better than I thought it was going to be. Great story, superb writing... I couldn't put it down! I'm now even more excited to see the movie!

The paranoia and senselessness of Stalinist Russia envelops the reader in this book that manages to combine a serial killer detective story with historical fiction with true crime. I picked this up after reading and enjoying The Farm by the same author. The books are totally different from one another, but both manage to build suspense and tell a great story and both capture their respective atmospheres (here, Russia; there, Sweden). This book was a little too disturbing for me to say that I "really liked" it, but I was certainly intrigued by it. The beginning started out with such a dismal setting, that I almost gave up on it without reading further. If GoodReads had half-stars, this would get 4 and half. Child 44 is a great murder mystery, but it's also a fabulous look at 1950's era Soviet Union (provided this is accurate, of course). My only complaint, keeping this from 5 stars, is that there's a lack of explanation once the murderer is caught, mainly with his method. Parts of it make sense, but p ...more

This is the second book that I’ve read by Tom Rob Smith now (the first was The Farm - I really liked that one). I definitely enjoy his writing style. It flows well and makes for a pleasant, easy read. Some of the plot elements in this one did seem a bit far fetched, but I do think that I liked it overall.
